CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Lars
Age: It's only said that he's a high schooler, and I imagine him to be about 17.
Canon: Steven Universe
Canon Point: After Shirt Club. season 2 episode 6.
Character Information: Here!

Personality: Lars is first, and foremost, a jerk. It's a fact he's not shy to hide. He's your average stereotypical bully character, picking on the lessor and acting as if he's all that and more. He constantly picks on Steven Universe, the main character of the show, most likely because Steven is younger and doesn't get upset with Lars' teasing that often. Though Lars' teasing is pretty tame compared to your average bully, sticking with snotty remarks and sarcasm. Picking on Steven's gem powers or bugging Steven and Connie about being in love, for a few examples. But that isn't to say he can't get mean, he's made a remark about Steven being friendless before and he was relentlessly putting another Beach City resident, Ronaldo Fryman, down at a horror movie party that Ronaldo was holding. Constantly calling him weird, complaining about the movie choice and arguing about pretty much anything that bothered him. Which was everything, really. Lars is a hard person to please, unless you're willing to go along with whatever he wants to do, and even then he'd probably complain about how you're doing something wrong.

He can be manipulative at times too, but he's been working on fixing that as of an incident involving his coworker, Sadie. He's gotten her to do a lot of things for him in the past, including standing in front of a game shop for seven hours to pick up a video game for him, because he was banned from the store. And later on, he got hurt during work and fudged his reaction, acting as if it was the end of the world so he could get the rest of the day off. Because Sadie had feelings for him, she complied. However, she stopped by his house later that day to give him donuts and see if he was doing alright, and caught him playing in his backyard on a trampoline of all things with a few other teens. She admitted the next day while in tears that she saw him with those other teenagers, and that she felt used and hurt and since then he hasn't shown any manipulative tendencies, especially towards Sadie.

Which brings me to my next point, Lars is a jerk and a bully, but he's not a bad guy. It might be cliche to say, but he's really got a nice heart deep under the shell he's built around himself, and he's shown it off a few times during the show. He actually has a tendency to say or do very hurtful things without entirely meaning to, and he always tries to apologize in his own ways. Such as during the aforementioned situation with Sadie. The situation blew way out of hand, after she had seen him quite obviously not injured. Steven brought Sadie something called "firesalt" to get back at Lars, which if you use some firesalt on food, it makes it extremely hot. Sadie, having gotten quite mad at Lars complaining about how bad his back hurt when she knew he was lying, dumped more salt than she should have and the result was with Lars literally breathing fire from how hot it was. After a sequence of chasing him down with a fire extinguisher because he was terrified of his painful newfound ability, Sadie's tearful explanation of how she felt hurt and lied to ensued and he felt extremely guilty for what he'd done. And even though his hands, mouth, and throat were severely burned, he wasn't mad at her at all and even offered to help her clean up the town from the fiery mess he left it in. And it might not sound like much, but coming from Lars, it really is a big deal when he offers to actually help with something.

He also, during that previously mentioned 7 hour game trip, cleaned his room and bought Sadie her favourite snacks so she could spend the night playing the new game with him. And he affectionately called her "Player 2" or "P2" afterwards because she was his player two.. until the mess with the firedonut happened, since she mentioned that being called player two felt like he was saying "she could be anyone" to him. It's also notable that during an episode, Island Adventure, Lars was trapped on an island with Steven and Sadie and slowly during the time there and away from the stress of every day life, we see Lars open up to them. He started grumpy and pissed that they let them get trapped, and ended up smiling and cooking them good dinners. Not to mention he took care of Sadie when she got hurt and cuddled up to her during the nights. It's pretty rare to see Lars legitimately enjoying his time and company, but it's not because he doesn't necessarily enjoy his time spent.

He spends his time worrying about his image, and how others perceive him. He's very insecure with fitting in and being seen as someone cool or edgy, that he's built a wall around him. He picks on others to avoid being picked on, he sucks up to anyone he thinks is cool, and he talks himself up to try to make himself seem confident. He's obsessed with his image. It's only when he's completely comfortable and not around many people does he start opening up. And it's something that's been going on since his childhood. He used to be friends with Ronaldo, the boy he swore to hell and back was weird and a loser. Hell, they were arguably best friends when they were children. But they started a club together dedicated to finding weird happenings in Beach City, and while setting up their clubhouse in an abandoned lighthouse that was possessed by a gem, Lars was smacked in the face with a board when he was carving their names into the wall. Ronaldo got a very embarrassing shot of Lars getting hit in the face, and to stop from getting that picture shared all over television, Lars ripped up the photo even though it meant so much to Ronaldo. He proclaimed "you know I can't let people see me like that.." when Ronaldo mourned over the photo, and the two's friendship was ended after a heated argument, ending with Lars yelling about Ronaldo not understanding why Lars cared so much about how others viewed him because Ronaldo didn't know what people said about him, implying that Lars may have gotten picked on for being friends with Ronaldo or at least paranoid about their friendship being found out because of what was being said.

He tries really hard to impress or please the "cool crowd" as well, as seen in multiple episodes throughout the series. He spent an entire episode traveling with Steven and three other teens -- Jenny, Sour Cream, and Buck Dewey -- who he deems as the coolest teens around. And the entire trip was filled with him trying to talk himself up or get them to notice him over Steven. Pointing out how cool his shirt was when Buck commented on Steven's, complimenting Jenny's car which was her father's pizza delivery truck, and he constantly belittled Steven by calling him lame when he'd make suggestions. And later on, Buck visited the donut shop he works at and asked for a salad, even though they only sold donuts. But Lars was quick to agree and ran out of that store as fast as he could to whip him up the best salad he could muster.

Another thing about Lars is that he has a hard time admitting his own mistakes. Though as stated before, he does apologize in his own way, he's never said the words "I'm sorry" in the series once, despite messing up quite a few different times. He always skirted around the actual apology, as if it was because saying sorry was admitting that he was in the wrong. He has a need to find someone else to blame when a situation goes bad, as well, even when it's his own fault. Which was shown during the trip with the cool kids, they jumped into a pond filled living moss that Steven's mom planted and it completely wrapped itself around the teens, making it impossible for them to move or breathe. Steven tried to warn them but they didn't listen, but rather than admitting that Steven was right and they should have left, Lars immediately yelled at him saying it was his mother's fault that everything went awry. And even later during the horror movie-a-thon, because Lars carved his name into the lighthouse, it was trying to get back at him years later and the entire time he was blaming Ronaldo for it saying he was the one who was making the lighthouse act weird, and he even tried getting Sadie to ditch Ronaldo and Steven with him.

Lars is also, which probably won't come off as surprising, very lazy and labeled as a slacker. He does his work more or less, but if he can get someone to do it for him, he'll take that chance immediately over doing his own work. As stated before, he's faked a severe back injury to get out of working for the day and he makes a habit of sleeping at the counter during work hours, leaving Sadie to do most of the work. Even while they were taking boxes of ice cream out of the freezer because the power was out and they all melted, his pile was half as tall as Sadie's. She took two or three at a time while he only took one. He was even willing to get fired after Sadie yelled at him for sleeping at the counter.

One last thing is that he's pretty awkward, and has a case of "foot-in-mouth" syndrome. He doesn't really think before he talks which usually results in hurt feelings, like telling Steven his dead mother was at fault for the moss accident. He's brought up wanting to see some "hot babes" around Sadie, whom has a crush on him, before. Which was after he was made aware of how he had hurt her deeply, and was made obvious of her feelings for him. And his attempts at pleasing the cool kids comes off as quite awkward as well, because he really comes off as trying too hard. He's pretty bad at getting his own feelings across too, constantly slipping out his real feelings or thoughts about a situation and changing it mid sentence to sound less lame. Like at some point during the movie night, Sadie was trapped somewhere down in the basement thanks to the lighthouse and after she was saved, Ronaldo asked if she was alright. Lars, having had been the most worried about her, was quick to speak up saying, "Oh yeah, we were both worried abou-- I mean, I ran down here faster!" He changed mid-sentence, to try to save face and talk himself up.
